1. Want to break into Cybersecurity but don’t know how to start?
I recently wrote an article just for you!
Learning Linux is fundamental to a successful cybersecurity career.
Here’s whats in the article:
- Why you should learn Linux
- How to setup a hands-on lab
- The best, FREE learning resources to learn Linux
- A hands-on Linux project that looks great on a resume!
You can read it here!
2. Free Web Security Classes!
If you follow me on Twitter / X, then you have probably already seen this.
But it’s such a good opportunity I have to share it here too!
PortSwigger is an industry leading application penetration testing company and I just found out that they have a FREE online security academy!
I’ve been checking it out and it looks REALLY good.
Here are some highlights:
- Introduction to Web Security
- Interactive security labs
- Classes ranging from Apprentice to Expert
- Teaches you how to use Burp Suite, which is a leading tool in the industry
These classes and hands-on labs would look fantastic on a resume or your project portfolio!
You can sign up for it here: Web Security Academy
Pro tip: did you know that you don’t have to pay for a class completion certificate to put it on your resume? Just simply put “Completed X learning path from Web Security Academy” in lieu of the paid certification! Employers care much more about your experience than your certs! Plus you can always share a screen shot of your class completion if they ask for it!
3. Tools of the Trade: Burp Suite
Since I highlighted PortSwigger this week, why not introduce their most famous tool, Burp Suite!
Burp Suite is the most widely used web application security testing software in the world!
It is an industry standard tool and if you want to be a Cybersecurity professional, you need to have at least a basic understanding of what it is.
Check out this Getting Started guide!
Pro tip: you don’t need to extensively study Burp Suite unless you want to be a Penetration Tester. But you SHOULD be able to talk about what the tool does!
Interview Question of the Week!
Each week I pose a question that I have personally asked or have been asked in real interviews. Try to answer the question by speaking your response out loud! It may feel weird at first but trust me: it will level up your interview game! Practice makes perfect!
“How do you stay up to date on the latest Cybersecurity news?”
Next week I will write out how I would answer this question, so look out for next weeks newsletter!
Last Week’s Interview Question Answer:
“Good question! The application layer of the OSI model acts as the interface to communicate with software and applications.”
