Do you NEED certifications to land $100k+ tech jobs?

Are certifications REQUIRED to get a high paying tech job?

NO!

Certifications are not required to get a high paying job in tech. I know many people with no degree and no certifications making over $100k+ per year in tech.

Really?

Yes. Really.

If you want to be a web developer, software developer, full stack engineer, etc then your practical skills and work portfolio will matter more than almost any certification.

So what’s the big deal with IT / Cybersecurity certs?

I won’t lie to you.

In IT / Cybersecurity specifically, SOME certifications can be very helpful in getting initial interviews.

But, no one is going to give you the job just because you passed a certification.

You will go through a technical interview that is specific to the job. The employer will ask you technical questions or might even ask you to perform a relevant task.

You MUST have the knowledge and practical skills to back up your certifications.

If you can’t nail the interview, you won’t get the job.

So do I get certified or not?

If you are pursuing a job in IT / Cybersecurity, then certifications can be worth the time, effort, and money. It will help you land more interviews and gives you a competitive advantage over non-certified applicants.

If you have an “in demand” cert it will be easier to negotiate higher salaries or hourly rates.

Additionally, many people find that pursuing a certification helps them have a more tangible goal to aim for. Instead of saying “I’m going to become highly proficient at X”, they instead say “I’m going to study and get certified in X”.

Both approaches are valid, but you don’t NEED any certifications to get a high paying tech job!
